Intro to Olympic Lifting

Your first step into Olympic weightlifting starts here.

Hosted by East Coast Barbell and led by coach Rob Hooper, this three-part seminar series introduces participants to the sport of Olympic weightlifting in a structured, supportive environment. Each 90-minute session focuses on one of the three competition lifts — the snatch, clean, and jerk — with an emphasis on proper technique, safety, and foundational movement skills.

The series is designed for beginners or anyone interested in trying Olympic weightlifting for the first time. Each session is limited to 9 participants to ensure individual attention and hands-on coaching. No prior experience is required.

Session 1: The Snatch
This session introduces the snatch — lifting the barbell from the floor to overhead in one continuous motion. Participants will learn key positions, movement patterns, and drills to develop coordination, timing, and balance.

Session 2: The Clean
The clean develops power and speed while teaching how to move efficiently under the bar. This session focuses on bar path, receiving position, and front-rack mechanics to support strong, consistent technique.

Session 3: The Jerk
The jerk completes the series, covering how to drive the bar overhead with stability and precision. Instruction will include footwork, balance, and the transition between the dip, drive, and split phases.
